Outside the Game

Cuba, the late 1960s.  Writer and civil servant Heberto Padilla  is at the height of his career, back from a diplomatic posting overseas, celebrated by Cuba’s literary scene and in line for the nation’s most prestigious literary prize.  All should be well for one of the nation’s finest and his new wife, Belkis, as they look forward to a life together.  But when literature and politics live so closely together, and an enigmatic friend in high places can mean safety and danger sit side by side, an outspoken artist’s fortunes can turn very quickly, and unexpectedly.  Based on true events, Outside the Game asks if anyone is safe when those in control can redefine the meaning of loyalty and patriotism at the drop of a hat.

The good thing is, you’ll go back and they won’t feel cheated, will they?… Yes, you’ll see them again soon, of course you will… We’re not going to do anything with this, with the recording… Because it would be a shame for you to end up in here for fifteen years, accused of any old nonsense… We’ll forget everything. A clean slate… You’re a solid chap, Padilla. You’ve put your foot in it, you’ve put your foot right to the bottom… But we’re going to give you a chance. The Revolution always gives a second chance. The Comandante loves you very much, old man, really… He says you’re a foolish dreamer but he trusts you.
