Cuba

The ailing Fidel Castro presides over a unique society on the brink of change.  Nostalgic for the adventures of her youth, Norma, an Englishwoman, returns to Cuba for the first time since the Seventies.  She meets Jesús, a seductive habanero, and falls into a whirlwind romance.  But the Cuba Norma remembers and idealises is not the Caribbean paradise she expected, and the pressures of real life on the island motivate her lover’s actions in ways she does not suspect.

Oh, señora, you have no problems!  You foreigner.  You on plane and…  poof!  No more problems!  Me, I have problems.  I have to scratch a life here.  I’m tired; old.  Really, you have no problems.  Don’t cry.

Cuba was commissioned by the BBC and was first performed on Radio 4 on 17 August 2007.  It was directed by Anne Edyvean and performed by Tilly Vosburgh, Jot Davies, Sonya Leite, Antonio Gil-Martínez, Javier Marzán, Martina Laird, John Dougall and Nitin Ganatra.
